The Rainbow Fish - LIVE!

I took JP to school this morning. It was her third day, and my first. I was excited to let her show me to her class and she walked straight to it. Well, she got a Little side tracked trying to show me the playground, but I assured her that i knew where the playground was and that she needed to go to class. When we got to the door it was still a few minutes early and she was going to have to wait outside with the other children. She got a little teary and asked if I could stay with her for a while. I told her that I would and she started to cry, saying she didn't want to go to school anymore. Wow! Two days in and already realizes that school stinks. She is smarter than I thought. It took me about six years to figure out that it wasn't really as much fun as the teachers and parents say. Anyway, the other kids gathered around the "scene of the accident," curious and honestly wanting to help. Several of them recognized her and said "Hi, JP." One little girl in particular was very sweet. I was squatting down talking to JP about the importance of school and how she needed to be there, and I had to go to work, and she was going to have so much fun, blah, blah, blah. This other little girl held her hand out with a little, tiny actually, piece of plastic jewelry. It looked like a Barbie doll jewel, it was so small. She said "Here JP, you can have this." I accepted it for JP and as she wiped her eyes I presented this gift of heart felt friendship to my daughter. She had the biggest smile on her face. She reached toward it with her little fingers and it fell to the ground, never to be seen again. Her heart was broken. The eyes began to well up again as the promise of a horrible day began to be reality. The world would never be the same. (I am trying to make this as dramatic as possible so you can enjoy the punchline) The same little redhead that gave it to JP to begin with then said, "Don't worry, I have more." She then proceeded to tug at her pants. She had on what had once been a very fashionable pair of jeans which were studded with tiny plastic jewels. I told her to hold on a minute, I have read The Rainbow Fish and I know how that story ends. I told her that she won't have any jewels left. Three other children instantly started chattering about The Rainbow Fish and how he gave away his scales to all his friends. The redhead, on the other hand remained unaffected by my attempt to distract her from the task. She dug in deeply with her little finger nails, pulled, twisted and I even think grunted once. Then **POP**, in her had was a tiny jewel, the same size as the first, but pink this time. It was like magic the way she could just produce these wonders from almost nowhere. The children had gathered to watch in amazement. The four teachers and two parents that were there could barely contain the laughter. By GP, JP's Daddy
